In its role of identifying and sharing best practice, SWIA has worked with a range of partners including practitioner forums, ACPOS, SCRA, councils, voluntary agencies and others to produce two practitioner guides. The guides are on chronologies and the effective management of social work recording. These initial topics were selected because of the issues and potential they present for improving practice. Evidence and learning from SWIA's inspection programme 2005 - 2009 has been used in the development of the guides. The guides are intended for practitioners working in social work services in the public, voluntary and private sectors. The guides were launched at a seminar event for practitioners on the 27th January 2010. The chronologies guide draws on practitioner experiences and uses a number of practice examples to explore what chronologies are and to identify their uses and their limitations. The guide on the effective management of social work recording also draws on practitioner experience and stresses the importance of good recording in social work practice. It emphasises that effectively managing social work recording has a direct impact on the improved quality of social work services for people who use them.
